Supporting Local

In March I looked at various seed companies and my advice was to support local if you can. I often feel that when I say support local I should put a giant asterisk by this saying or expand on the saying "support local if you can". Sometimes our financial situation does not allow us to support local. For example at markets I go to jam typically goes for $10/jar. I understand the reasoning behind this price, but I cannot afford to pay $10 for a jar of jam.

I know a lot of people think veggies at markets are way more expensive than at stores. Here's a tip shop at smaller farmers markets, the ones in your town/city that maybe aren't as popular. Also look up what veggie farmers are in your area and see if you can pick up from their farm. I sell a few veggies at markets and I try to keep my prices comparable to the big stores. Now I can guarantee that I will never sell you a green or red pepper for $3-$4 bucks (typically price in my area), they typically end up being a $1 or $2. I can also tell you my potatoes will always be more than store potatoes. Potatoes are labor intensive so I need to price accordingly.

There are many other ways you can support small businesses besides financially such as following them on social media, stopping in at farmers' markets and offering kind remarks, taking pictures, posting them on social media, and tagging the small business.
