I starting growing herbs to extend my season, my goal is to have a 6 month selling season.  I was already starting my onions, tomatoes, and peppers inside so it was quite easy to start growing herbs and selling them at markets.

Catnip- give to cats and watch them go nuts.  Can be used dry or fresh.  Catnip can also be used in teas.  I love marinating my cats plush toys with catnip: put a toy in a zip lock bag and sprinkle in some catnip, let it sit a couple of days, give to your cat, and watch them go nuts.  It is a perennial, which means it will come back year after year.  If allowed to flower, the flowers attract bees.

Cilantro- used in fresh salsa, Pico de Gallo, and as flavoring for meats, pickles, and pastries.  Growing Cilantro.

French Tarragon– Cannot be started from seed and I propagate to get new plants.  Has an anise flavor.

Lavender–  Flowers and leaves are used in soaps, potpourri, and other crafts.  Can be used in potted flower

containers to add color.  It is a perennial, but in Manitoba needs to be brought inside to survive the winter.

Lemon Balm: Used to make teas, in soups, stews, and salads.  May also be used in furniture polish and insect repellant recipes.  It is a perennial for zones 4 and 5.

Marjoram-Has a zesty flavor and is similar to oregano, but sweeter tasting. Oregano (Italian): used to flavor Italian dishes, eggs, soups, sauces, meats, stews, pizza, and more. Oregano (Greek):  A stronger tasting oregano, than Italian oregano. Parsley (Curly Moss): used for garnishes and to flavor soup Parsley (Italian): Large flat leaves that has more flavor than curly parsley Rosemary: Used in soups, meat dishes, and potato dishes.  Rosemary stems can also be used as skewers. Cannot survive in very cold climates and if you want to save the plant it will need to be brought inside. Sage: Use to flavor meat and stuffings.  When dried it can be used for crafts.  It is a perennial.

Stevia–  Is a sweetner.  Can be used fresh or dried.  Stick a leaf in coffee, tea, or iced tea to provide a natural sweetening.

Summer Savory- used to flavor soups (Green Bean Soup), stews, and gravies.  Has a peppery taste.

Sorrrel- used in salads. Used to flavor meats, soups, sauces, and stews.

Thyme- orange, lemon, or regular.  Use to flavor fish, meats, veggies, salads.
