I tried various methods to make my garden plan/map for the previous post. I tried drawing, but I realized quite quickly I don't have the skills to make an eye pleasing map. Next I tried MS Paint and realized I need gridlines. My plants were doing the wave in the rows. Next up I tried this program and quickly realized it wasn't up to snuff, but trudged on. This garden plan/map is not up to scale so the measurements might be a wee bit off. I quickly realized designing and drawing is not my forte. There are quite a few interesting looking garden planning apps. A lot required payment, but I could see the benefits of buying one of the apps if you're a beginner gardener. The one I looked at had the spacing requirements in a list format, which could be printed, which would be handy when planting your garden. It's much easier to do a plan on a computer than on a piece of paper, you can move things around on the computer until you find the perfect design.

  1. A row of flowers. Flowers have different spacing, check seed packages, tag labels, or the internet for spacing. Pollinator loving flowers: Bee balm, calendula, marigolds, milkweed, zinnias, hyssop, and nasturtium. By planting a row of flowers hopefully the bees will flock to your garden and your vegetable yields will increase.

  2. Two zucchini plants, I would go with one yellow and one green. Zucchini plants when they get going give and give so you don't need that many. One patty pan squash. Plants are spaced 3 feet apart. Fill up the rest of the row with potatoes. Potatoes can be spaced 1-2 feet apart.

  3. Half the row is pole beans and the other half is cucumbers. Both sides of the trellis is planted. Pole beans are planted 6” apart. Cucumbers are spaced 6” apart.

  4. Tomatoes: Roma, cherry, 2 red slicers, and heirloom. Plants are 3' feet apart. Tomato plants need cages or a trellis system to keep them upright. By keeping tomatoes off the ground it can help prevent diseases such as early blight.

  5. 3 sweet bell pepper plants spaced 18” apart, one mild hot peppers spaced at 18” apart, and one super hot spaced at 24” apart. 3 eggplant spaced at 18” apart. 2 tomatillo plants spaced at 3 feet apart. For proper pollination you need 2 tomatillo plants.

  6. A block that is 16-18” wide. A row of beets, onions, and carrots. Each row is 8” apart.

  7. A row of lettuce and herbs. Each one has it's own spacing.

Garden is 22 feet wide and 35 feet long. Each row is 3 feet apart from each other. I use 3 feet for simplicity sake. My go to measurements are 3 feet and which is one walk behind tiller width.

I hope you have fun designing and planning your garden. Hopefully my one nice plan and my one archaic plan gave you some inspiration.
